  12. ARLB015 Vanity call extension sought

  14. The ARRL has requested an extension of the comment deadline on an
  15. FCC proposal to establish a ''vanity'' call sign system.
  16.  
  17. The FCC's Notice of Proposed Rule Making, in PR Docket 93-305, was
  18. released December 29, 1993, with a comment deadline of March 7,
  19. 1994.

  21. The League immediately published the NPRM, in its entirety, in
  22. February 1994 QST, asking members to make their views on the matter
  23. known to their elected representatives.

  25. In its request for an extension of time for comments, until April
  26. 21, 1994, the ARRL said that because the matter of issuing preferred
  27. call signs involves a ''scarce resource,'' the maintaining of fairness
  28. in the program must be addressed.

  30. The League also said that the March 7 comment deadline simply did
  31. not allow enough time for ARRL members to express their views on the
  32. proposal and for the ARRL board to then formulate a position.
